According to the directive 2002/95/CE and the Restriction of the use of certain Hazardous Substances(RoHS), from 1st of July 2006 electronic equipment put on the market does not contain lead.

As alternative, in recent time lead free surface finishes have appeared , and with best flat surface finishes than the obtained with HAL. The problem with the irregular flat coplanar surface using HAL can, in some cases, make difficult the assembly of fine pitch components .

The most representative and well-known of these new surface finishes are : chemical gold , organic (OSP), chemical tin and chemical silver.
